Competitions
We continue to focus our efforts on the VEX Robotics Competition. Our program is currently after-school only, rather than based in a course, so focusing our limited time on one competition has been an important strategy for success. This allows the team to really progress through several iterations of design throughout the season.

U.S. OPEN COMPETITION - Omaha, Nebraska
We qualified to compete in the CREATE U.S. Open competition in Omaha, from April 3 - 5, 2014. It was a great tournament, with lots of competitive robots in several divisions. We'll definitely try to go back again next year.

VEX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - Anaheim, California

The VEX World Championship was a great experience! We competed well throughout the 3 days of matches, and finished 32nd out of 84 teams in our division. Our robot, pictured to the left as it went through inspection, was our best ever and held up well in closely-fought matches. We played with and against teams from China, Singapore, Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and throughout the US.
Next season's game, "Toss Up," has been released, and we're ready to get busy designing new robots!

San Antonio VEX - sponsored by the US Army

The San Antonio competition was on January 4th, 2013. The US Army was the host, providing the students with the opportunity to talk to Lt. Gen. Thomas Bostick of the Army Corps of Engineers, as well as tour the Army Strong Zone after the matches. We took a revised robot and tried out a new arm, with varying degrees of success. There's still plenty of work to do to get ready for Worlds in April!
Here's a short video about the competition. A couple of our team members are visible for just a second as they spoke with General Bostick.

This year we decided to attend the Houston Regional VEX Competition for the first time, on December 1st, 2012. It was a well-run, large tournament in Clear Lake with over 40 teams competing. Based on past performance, we were excited to have a fully-functional robot for our first meet of the year, and expected a day of troubleshooting and working out the kinks. While some of that did happen, we had a hugely successful tournament, winning 4 out of 5 of our matches, to finish qualifications in 5th place. In a testament to good scouting, we chose two excellent teams for our alliance, and worked our way through quarterfinals and semifinals to get to compete in the final match. We won in two straight games! This is the first time we've ever been Tournament Champions, and we're thrilled to qualify for the VEX World Championship at our very first meet of the year. Team 6696B from Mexico deserves most of the credit for an outstanding robot that has it all - great design, excellent autonomous programming, and high scoring. And Team 3335 from Cypress was excellent for a first-year team and great at de-scoring.

2011- 2012 COMPETITION SEASON: Gateway
Austin VEX - The Excellence Award

The Austin Regional VEX Competition was held on Saturday, March 10th, 2012 at Anderson High School. We competed with 45 other teams from the city and around the state.
While we were competitive throughout the day in the matches, it was in the interview that our team excelled. The students impressed the judges with their design, presentation, and design notebook. We won the top judged award - the Excellence Award - which qualifies us to move on to the VEX World Championship in Anaheim, California in April!

Dallas VEX - The Sportsmanship Award

We attended a new competition in Dallas on February 25th, 2012. This was by far the most competitive event we've attended, outside of the world championship our first year. All the teams were solid and competitive and many were outstanding.
This was really our first chance to compete with our robot on a competition field, and we learned a lot. The team made both major and minor changes throughout the day to improve the robot's performance and fix mechanical issues that occurred. We learned a lot about troubleshooting with a very helpful VEX designer who attended the competition.
The judges noticed our hard work and determination throughout the event, and awarded us the Sportsmanship Award for our attitude and work ethic.
